Handmade rugs have been famous worldwide for their elegance, class and beauty. These have been manufactured from the ancient period in different parts of the world and are still considered as one of the best item of home décor. These are hand knotted and are quite different in look and feel as compared to machine made rugs. Machine made rugs are not actually knotted, the fibers are put into place by machine and then secured with latex backing. Tapestry - The Glory and Magnificence of Aubusson

Situated in the Limousin region of France on the banks of the River Creuse, the Aubusson Tapestry Works are some of the best of their kind in the world. The factory originated in the fourteenth century probably through Flemish weavers developing the craft both at Aubusson and nearby Felletin.

Local Production

The distance between the Flemish and Parisian Tapestry Works and the craftsmen at Aubusson meant that production was limited to clients in the local area.

William Morris and the Holy Grail Tapestries

One of the most significant tapestries woven in the nineteenth century are those of the Holy Grail Series by William Morris. Originally commissioned by an Australian mining engineer, William Knox D'Arcy, the tapestries formed part of a larger decoration for his dining room at Stanmore Hall. They represent the peak of Morris' career and are one of the most significant works to emerge from the Arts and Crafts Movement.
